Turning Around My Electronics Curse

Fortunately, I was able to get one of my two recently malfunctioning/broken playstations repaired. My original one, which I’ve had for about 5 years now, was fried in January when Maddy plugged the 110 volt plug into a 220 volt socket without a voltage converter. When I was home during the break in late-January, I got one of those new, tiny PS2s and brought it back with me. It worked great, but then it suddenly died on me without any provocation a few weeks ago. That happened a week after my laptop crashed on me (again, randomly, out of nowhere), so I was pretty angry and frustrated by this curse I had with all my electronic possessions.

I took both PS2s to a playstation store in Izmir referred to me by Peter. Normally people go to these shops so they can have an illegal chip inserted into the consoles so they can play copied games. Whatever the procedure costs, it’s worth it because copied games sell for only $5 as opposed to $80 or $90 (an original PS2 goes for 450 yeni turkish lira here, which equals $338. Bear in mind that they sell in the US for $150!). So the chip and copied games scheme is a pretty nice deal, huh? I didn’t need that, though. I just wanted mine to function again. They looked at both consoles and told me the laser eye on the new one was either dirty or broken, and it would require an extensive cleaning or a replacement. That would run me 100 euros, and it would break the US warranty, which I definitely didn’t want to do since I can get the thing fixed for free once I get back home. My older, clunkier playstation, though, they said they could fix that up easily in one day for $50. I thought burning out the electrics on it would make it a goner, but apparently it wasn’t all that hard to repair. I was elated, and on Monday I had a functional playstation again.

Now, I hardly ever play any games with it, but with my computer dead, it was the only way I could watch movies. I was going a little mad not being able to rent anything any more, plus I had the entire first season of The Wire to watch (it’s incredible, by the way- so far it’s living up to all the critical praise and then some. I can’t wait to watch season 2 when I’m home later this summer). I even brought over the 2nd season of Alias with me (plus the first two seasons of Three’s Company- given to me by Nick for Christmas), but I don’t know if I’ll have any time to get to it. I’ll be back home in a little more than three weeks, and that’s gonna go by so fast. Really, these last three months have just whizzed by.
