I Can't Go For That (But I Will)

Sitting in a cheap diner late one night in Bruges eating a really terrible hamburger, I heard this song over the speakers that immediately caught my attention. I knew I had heard it before, sometime, somewhere, but for the life of me I couldn’t remember anything. The tune had this great, bass-heavy beat to it, and it had to be from sometime in the 80s. It stirred something inside me because it was so acutely familiar, yet my memory was failing me terribly. It took me a few days and then one morning near the end of my trip it came to me in a Eureka-like moment (although, no, I was not in a bathtub at the time).

The song was “I Can’t Go For That” by none other than the great Hall and Oates. Hot damn, I love that song! I can’t get enough of it now. Everyone remembers them for Out of Touch, Man Eater or Rich Girl (though I always favored Private Eyes), but this song is amazing. I’m surprised some hip-hop group hasn’t sampled the beat for a rap song, or maybe they already have; I wouldn’t be surprised.

Hall and Oates are making a bit of a comeback these days, and they’re touring this summer with another classic 80s band, the oft-under appreciated and overlooked Tears For Fears. Some double bill, huh? I was ecstatic when I saw that show on pollstar.com a few weeks ago. They’re swinging around the northeast in mid-to-late August, and I’ll either see them in Boston at the Bank of America Pavilion (how many name changes can one concert venue go through in 5 years? That place must have broken the record.) or I’ll go down to NY and see them with Nick at Jones Beach.

Good stuff. If you’re not familiar with the Hall and Oates oeuvre, especially I Can’t Go For That, I highly recommend a visit to Itunes post haste.
